How to Prepare for a Colour Appointment

A little preparation helps your colourist plan the right formula, saves time in the chair and gives you a result you’ll love.

Be honest about your colour history

Tell your colourist about everything that’s been on your hair in the past couple of years: box dye, henna, salon colour, lightener, keratin or chemical straightening treatments. These affect how new colour behaves. Undisclosed history is one of the most common causes of unexpected results.

Patch tests

Hair colour can cause allergic reactions, even in people who have coloured their hair before. Colour manufacturers generally recommend a skin allergy test at least 48 hours before each colour service. Your salon will tell you its requirements when you book. If you’ve ever reacted to hair dye, tell the salon before your appointment.

In the days before

  • Arrive with hair in its usual state. Your stylist will advise whether it should be freshly washed.
  • Avoid heavy oils or styling products on the day unless advised otherwise.
  • Collect inspiration photos, ideally in natural light.
  • Think about your budget and how often you’re happy to come back for maintenance.

Allow enough time

Lightening, balayage and colour correction can take several hours. Big changes, such as going from dark to light, may need more than one session to keep your hair in good condition. Don’t book something important straight after your appointment.

On the day

  • Wear a dark top you don’t mind getting a little colour on.
  • Bring a snack and water for longer appointments.
  • Speak up during the consultation if anything is unclear, including the cost.
