How to Maintain Hair Colour Between Appointments
Colour fades for predictable reasons: washing, heat, sun and water. A few small habits can keep your shade looking fresh for longer.
Why colour fades
Every time hair is washed, a little colour is lost. Hot water, frequent shampooing, heat styling, UV exposure and minerals in water can all speed this up. Lighter and vibrant shades, such as reds and pastel tones, tend to fade fastest.
The first few days
Many stylists suggest waiting a couple of days before your first wash after colouring. Ask your colourist what they recommend for the products they used.
Wash smarter
- Wash less often. Try stretching the time between washes with a dry shampoo.
- Use cooler water. Lukewarm water is gentler on colour than very hot water.
- Choose colour-safe products. Gentle, sulphate-free shampoos are a popular choice for coloured hair.
- Condition every time. Well-conditioned hair holds colour better and looks shinier.
Keep tone in check
Blonde and lightened hair can turn warm or brassy over time. A purple or blue toning shampoo, used once a week or as your stylist suggests, helps neutralise unwanted warmth. Brunettes can use tinted conditioners to boost richness. A salon gloss or toner between lightening appointments refreshes tone and shine.
Protect from heat and sun
- Use a heat protectant before blow-drying or using hot tools, and keep temperatures moderate.
- In strong sun, wear a hat or use a hair product with UV protection.
- Before swimming, wet your hair with clean water and apply conditioner, then rinse soon afterwards.
Plan your next visit
How often you need a touch-up depends on your colour, technique and how fast your hair grows. Ask your stylist to suggest a schedule when you book. Pre-booking makes it easier to get a time that suits you.
